Windermere is England’s largest lake and it wouldn’t be a trip to the Lake District without enjoying some time on the majestic water itself. The lake is a downhill 2 mile walk from Lakes Hostel and there are two routes; the most direct (literally walk down the hill!) takes you through both vibrant Windermere and Bowness villages. Alternatively, you can take a detour through peaceful Sheriff’s Wood. If you don’t fancy being on your feet, you can grab one of the regular buses from Windermere Station, or Ellerthwaite Square that will drop you right at the shorefront. Simply ask for a ticket to Bowness Piers. Once you’re by the water you’ve got options; hop aboard one of the many Windermere Lake Cruises tours, or hire your own self-drive from Windermere Boat Hire up to 6 people can share and pilot their own for around £35. They also have eco-friendly electric boats, even a completely pink one! Every hour the pink boat is hired for donates £10 to Cancer Research. If you’ve come over a bit Sir Steve Redgrave why not take a rowing boat.
