Three Generations
Lakes Boutique Hostel is ideal for your extended family to celebrate and relax together as there’s plenty to do for all ages and our various rooms keep your sleeping arrangements nice and flexible.
Even during the school holidays, we often have mid-week availability so don’t think it has to be a weekend. Below we have a suggested itinerary that should keep everyone happy & give you some ideas of things to do.
Monday
If you’ve had a long drive, you’ll need somewhere for younger members of the family to let off steam and the drivers to relax.
We’d recommend Brockhole, the Lake District National Park Centre. It has lake access, gardens, and a lovely cafe as well as visitor information, a playground, the Gaddum Restaurant, and, for the more adventurous of all ages, Tree Top Trek and Nets.
Tuesday
Take a lake steamer down to Lakeside where you’ll find a steam railway to Haverthwaite, the Lakes Aquarium, and the Lakes Motor Museum. You can also visit Fell Foot Park and one of the biggest geocache areas in England in Great Knott Wood.
ON the way, buy a selection of sweets for your stay at Sweet Traditions. There will be lots of memories in there too!
Wednesday
Older members of your family may have memories of Swallows and Amazons that they’d love to share with the youngsters – we’d recommend Windermere Jetty, the new family-friendly steamboat museum as an ideal venue for some storytelling and plenty of exploration. Check the website for events and heritage boat trips too.

Thursday
If you came to climb a mountain, there are plenty to choose from and routes that are suitable for all ages and abilities. Orrest Head is the closest to Lakes Hostel and will give you great views but there’s also Loughrigg at the northern end of Windermere, starting from Ambleside, and, for the more experienced walkers, lots of options in Langdale, around Coniston or above Ambleside and Grasmere towards Helvellyn and Fairfield. Make sure you’ve got strong footwear and waterproofs as well as plenty of warm clothing, torches and a map and compass or walking guide.
Friday
We know how useful it is to have something to do once you’re packed up and before you head off. Our recommendation would be to pull into the Mill Yard at Staveley (just off the road to Kendal and the M6). There are great cafes – and a brewery and a bakery – as well as a brilliant bike shop, riverside walks and a lovely climb up into the woods behind the village.
Make more memories and enjoy every minute of your break.
